Dairy
The U.S. dairy industry, like many other livestock industries, has seen much consolidation and expansion in the last several years. In 2002, 3.2% of the U.S. dairy herds milked over 500 cows and produced 38% of the nation's milk. Now the number of dairy farms with over 500 milking cows has grown to almost 4% of U.S. dairy herds. These farms now produce 45% of the total U.S. milk production. Even after all the expansion that has taken place, the average dairy herd size in the U.S. remains near 150 cows.
